The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
