As any major awards ceremony draws close, one notices a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything during that awards season
- Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
